To "ladder" in a poker tournament means to move up in the prize money rankings by outlasting other players, without necessarily accumulating a lot of chips or winning many hands. The goal is to survive long enough to secure a higher payout as other players get eliminated. It's a strategy often used when close to the money or at the final table.
